A journal of random thoughts on investing (primarily public equities). My goal is to beat the S&P 500 annualized return by +10% on a long term basis using a concentrated, value-based approach (and yes, I’m aware that this is highly improbable!).

About Me

I grew up in Los Angeles, graduated with a degree in Computer Science from the University of California at Berkeley, and was fortunate enough to start two relatively successful companies in the online travel industry. Currently, I live in Hawaii and spend most of my time researching investment opportunities (and surfing).

While investing has always been a hobby of mine, I should caution that I am not an expert: my investment philosophy and methodologies are still being developed, my ideas may be terrible, and I'll undoubtedly make many mistakes along the way.

Originally my writings were intended to be anonymous, but I've always felt that the more transparent things are, especially in the financial industry, the more they resonate with readers. It is easy to post an anonymous opinion on something, because even if you are proven wrong there is little accountability or embarrassment. It is easy to claim you've beaten the market when you change your benchmark after the fact, only brag about your successes, or selectively choose favorable time frames for comparison. Let the goals above be forever etched in stone.

I am also hopeful that by putting my real name behind my thoughts, and sharing those thoughts publicly, I will be forced to be more critical in my thinking, encouraged to learn from my mistakes, and held more accountable to my ideas (and track record).

I hope that you enjoy reading!
